Gratitude is due Fr. Martin Wallace, O.P.
of the Dominican Friars of the Province
of the Assumption of B. Virgin Mary in Australia
for providing the foundational PHP code and PostGreSQL Database
of the Ordo
Ad Majorem Dei Gloriam
The texts of the scripture readings of the current day may always be obtained
from the website of the US Conference of Catholic Bishops:
http://www.usccb.org/nab/today.shtml
Alternatively, one may obtain specific texts by going to
http://bible.oremus.org
At the latter site, one can request a passage directly in this manner:
http://bible.oremus.org/?Mt 5:1-11
Another site giving the liturgical reading for each day of the year
may be found at
http://www.servicioskoinonia.org/BiblicalLiturgicalCalendar/
Note that this last site makes use of the Latin American liturgical
calendar (with local Latin American feasts).
This electronic document is a first attempt to provide a perpetual on-line
equivalent to the traditional printed Ordo. Any computer program
only does what it is told to do -- mistakes that exist are result of the
human error of the programmer.
In adapting a work created by the efforts of Dominican Father Martin Wallace
of Australia, errors may have been introduced in my attempts to remove
celebrations proper to the Dominicans and to Australia and to introduce
celebrations proper to the Society of Jesus and to the United States of
America and to Canada. I would hope and pray that such errors be quickly brought
to my attention for correction.

A Jesuit, particularly if travelling, has to contend with several national calendars, as well as local ones and the calendar of the Society.
This Ordo aims to give simple directions for Jesuits in the U.S. in the dioceses in which the Society has canonical houses. Jesuits ministering in other dioceses will still need to consult local calendars.
As well as the General Roman Calendar and the Calendar of the Society, local celebrations such as the anniversary of the dedication of the Cathedral and principal local patrons have been included where they are known.
Also included are liturgical directives or advice, drawn from the liturgical books of the Roman Rite, and the documents of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments, including the 2002 General Instruction of the Roman Missal. These indications are included to draw attention to easily neglected or misunderstood provisions. They are not complete, nor do they always refer to the most important aspects of liturgy. Recourse should always be had to the original documents.
Since this is the first attempt in the U.S. to produce such an Ordo, some matters have been overlooked. Please do not hesitate to bring errors or omissions to the editor's notice. He would be particular grateful for further information regarding local calendars in various dioceses in the U.S.
This Liturgical Calendar follows the Roman Calendar
and the proper Calendar of the Society of Jesus, adapted for use in
the United States of America and Canada
by the inclusion of celebrations proper to the Society and
celebrations proper to the U.S. and to Canada.
Local celebrations (titular feasts, diocesan patrons, anniversaries of dedication etc.) are shown for those places where the Society in the U.S. has houses. Those working or living in other places need to consult local calendars for local variations.
I. The Calendar:
Certain celebrations [e.g., Christmas, Pentecost
and Assumption] have proper Vigil Masses in addition to the Mass for
the day itself. These Vigil Masses (with their proper readings) are intended to be used either
before or after Evening Prayer I of the celebration.
On Saturdays in Ordinary Time when there is no obligatory memorial, an optional memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary is permitted. Whenever this optional memorial is allowed, a Mass from the Collection of Masses in Honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary may be used as an alternative.
II. Holy Days of Obligation:
In the U.S., in addition to all Sundays, the following are observed as Holy Days of Obligation (except in Hawai`i):
- Jan 1, Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God (not of obligation when it falls on a Monday or Saturday, not of obligation in the metropolitan province of Los Angeles [Southern California]);
- Aug 15, Assumption of Mary (not of obligation when it falls on a Monday or Saturday);
- Nov 1, All Saints (not of obligation when it falls on a Monday or Saturday);
- Dec 8, Immaculate Conception (Patronal Feast of the U.S.) (when Dec 8 falls on a Sunday, the observance is transferred to Monday, Dec 9, but the obligation is not transferred);
- Dec 25, Christmas, the Nativity of the Lord.
In Hawai`i, following the policies of the Conference of Bishops of the South Pacific, only Dec 8 and Dec 25 are retained as Holy Days of Obligation.
The Solemnity of the Ascension is celebrated on the Seventh Sunday of Easter, except in the east coast ecclesiastical provinces of Boston, Hartford, New York, Newark, and Philadelphia, and in the state of Nebraska. In these areas, it is observed on the Thursday between the Sixth and Seventh Sundays of Easter and is a Holy Day of Obligation.
In Canada, in addition to all Sundays, the following are observed as Holy Days of Obligation:
- Jan 1, Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God;
- Dec 25, Christmas, the Nativity of the Lord.
III. Patronal Feasts:
In addition to the celebrations proper to U.S. and Canada, the Society, and the state, every religious community should celebrate the following (GNLYC 52c):
- Solemnity of the anniversary of the Dedication of the church on the anniversary day of the dedication, if the church was consecrated. If the day of dedication is unknown, this solemnity is usually celebrated on October 25 or on the Sunday of Ordinary Time before November 1 (cf. Notitiae, v. 8 (1972), p. 103; Doc. on Lit., 3818, footnote R10);
- Solemnity of the titular saint of the church;
- Solemnity of the principal patron of their house;
- Feast of the anniversary of the Dedication of the Cathedral;
- Feast of the principal patron of the diocese, or more extensive territory.
Other local celebrations (e.g., diocesan secondary patrons, other
diocesan saints) have been included to help Jesuits join in prayer
with the local Church.
IV. Typography of this Calendar:
A. Italics: indicate an element of the liturgy of the day which is optional, e.g., sequence; or indicate an Optional Memorial, e.g., Dec 4, St John Damascene. They are also used for words in other languages, e.g. Te Deum.
B. Explanatory material is set in smaller type.
C. The letters SJ in the margin indicate a celebration or rubrical directions proper to the Society. E. Notes regarding day of specially offered Masses by Jesuits appear like this. F. Special commemorations appear like this. G. Celebration proper
to Canada appear like and/or with the notation [Canada].
- Mass ad lib.. This is a reminder to the celebrant that on weekdays of Ordinary Time there is a choice of Masses that may be used (cf. 2002 GIRM 355):
- any of the Masses for Sundays in Ordinary Time;
- an optional memorial assigned to that date;
- a Saint whose is listed for that date in the Martyrology (thus permitting the use of texts for Jesuit Saints/Blessed in a non-Jesuit church);
- a votive Mass or Masses (or Prayers) for various needs and occcasions;
- the "daily" Mass for the Dead (in moderation), provided the Mass is being offered specifically for one or more deceased (cf. 2002 GIRM 355, 381).
Appropriate readings may be chosen from the Lectionary.
On weekdays of Ordinary Time, the Liturgy of the Hours uses the seasonal texts or the texts of the optional memorial chosen for the Mass.
- pref = preface
- prop = proper. NOTE: When "proper" is noted for a reading on a memorial, that reading is to be chosen over the seasonal reading (cf. 2002 GIRM 358).
- 2002 RM = 2002 (3rd ed.) Roman Missal [NOTE: "[2002 RM]" or
"[post-2002 RM]" is used to note celebrations included in the most
recent edition of the Roman Missal (or added afterwards), but which
are not found in the previous English translations of the Sacramentary
or Lectionary. Such celebrations would also not be found in the
Liturgy of the Hours; those praying the major hours should use prayers chosen from the Commons.]
- [SJ] = indicates a celebration listed on the proper calendar of the Society of Jesus.
- [USA] = indicates a celebration listed on the proper calendar for the Dioceses of the United States.
- [Canada] = indicates a celebration listed on the proper calendar for the Dioceses of Canada.
NOTE: The general norms for celebrating a Mass other than what is indicated by the calendar are given in 2002 GIRM 352-385.
To summarize:
- On Solemnities of obligation, Sundays of Advent, Lent, and Easter, Holy Thursday and the Easter Triduum, no ritual Masses (including Nuptial Masses), Funeral Masses, or other Masses for various needs (and votive Masses) are permitted. (2002 GIRM 372, 380)
- On other Solemnities, Ash Wednesday, Holy Week, the Octave of Easter, and All Souls, Funeral Masses are permitted; however, ritual Masses (including Nuptial Masses) and other Masses for various needs (and votive Masses) are NOT permitted. (2002 GIRM 372, 380)
- Only with the permission of the local Bishop may Masses for various needs (and votive Masses) be celebrated on Sundays of Christmas or Ordinary Times, on Feasts, during Dec 17-24 or the Christmas Octave, during weekdays of Lent. (2002 GIRM 354, 374, 376)
The table at the following link summarizes on which days Ritual Masses (e.g., Nuptial Masses), Masses for Various Needs, and Votive Masses may be celebrated. http://math.scu.edu/~dsmolars/ordo/table.html
VI. Other Abbreviations used in this Calendar:
- DPPL : Directory on Popular Piety and the Liturgy, Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments (2001)
- GILH = General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours (1971)
- GIRM = General Instruction of the Roman Missal (2002)
- HCWEOM = Holy Communion and Worship of the Eucharist Outside of Mass (1973)
- PS = Paschale Sollemnitatis (Circular Letter Concerning the Preparation and Celebration of the Easter Feasts), Congregation for Divine Worship & Discipline of the Sacraments, 16 January 1988
- RC or GNLYC = Roman Calendar or General Norms for the Liturgical Year and Calendar (1969; as amended)
- RCIA = Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (1972)
VII. Note on Evening Prayer:
On Mondays through Fridays that are seasonal weekdays and on memorials, Evening Prayer (Vespers) of the Liturgy of the Hours is normally taken from the office of the day. (Special rules hold for the Octaves of Christmas and Easter.) This principle also usually holds on Sundays, Solemnities and Feasts.
Since the liturgical day of Sundays and Solemnities starts the prior evening, on Saturdays and on days before Solemnities, Evening Prayer is usually of the following Sunday or Solemnity.
Confusion may arise when a solemnity (or Feast of the Lord) occurs back to back with another solemnity or Sunday. In such cases, Evening Prayer celebrated between the two celebrations should be of the higher ranking celebration (as found in the Table of Liturgical Celebrations [found at the beginning of the Roman Missal or Vol. 1 of the Liturgy of the Hours]) (cf. GNLYC, 61).
In general, Sundays of Advent, Lent, and Easter rank above Solemnities (resulting in the transferrence of occuring Solemnities), and Solemnities rank above Feasts of the Lord which rank above Sundays of the Christmas Season and of Ordinary Time (resulting in the omission of the feast or Sunday celebration). In those few cases in a typical year when such conflicts arise (sometimes due to Solemnities which have been transferred), one is advised to consult a printed Ordo.
Night Prayer (Compline) always should be chosen as is appropriate for the Evening Prayer celebrated earlier that day.

| Lent is a penitential season of prayer, fasting and almsgiving in preparation for Easter.
Catholics over the age of reason are required to receive Holy Communion at least once a year (CIC 920 #1), normally during the Easter season (CIC 920 #2). In the United States, this has been extended to between the First Sunday of Lent and Trinity Sunday.
During Lent Alleluia is always omitted at Mass and Office (even on solemnities and feasts) and hymns containing Alleluia are not used. The Gloria and Te Deum are included only on solemnities and feasts. The organ is used only to sustain singing, and floral decoration is not permitted (except on solemnities and on Laetare Sunday.) PS 25.
The weekdays of Lent are privileged, so any memorial is considered to be optional. If it is commemorated, at Mass the opening prayer of the memorial is used in place of the seasonal text. At the Office of Readings, after the weekday readings, one may add the Hagiographical Reading of the memorial, the responsory and the concluding prayer. At Morning and Evening Prayer, the prayer of the saint may be added (with its antiphon) after the prayer of the day (omitting the conclusion). (cf. Gen. Intro. Lit. Hours, 238-39.)
The Prayer over the People at the end of Mass is recommended on weekdays.
The use of the Eucharistic Prayers for Reconciliation is particularly appropriate during Lent. They may be used with one of the Lenten prefaces (2002 RM, Appendix).

N.B. |
Penitential practices during Lent:
- According to Church Law, Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are observed as days of fast and abstinence (CIC 1251). In the United States, all the Fridays in Lent are days of abstinence. Abstinence is to be observed by all over the age of 14 (CIC 1252). Those between ages of 18 (CIC 97 #1) and 59 [inclusive] (CIC 1252) are bound by the law of fast.
- If it seems appropriate, on Ash Wednesday or on other days during Lent, some communal penitential celebration or "rite of reconciliation" may be held, whether sacramental or non-sacramental (according to the spirit of the Rite of Penance, nn.36 - 37). This celebration may not immediately precede or be incorporated into Mass.
- On Ash Wednesday, after the sign of the cross and greeting, the Penitential Act is omitted at Mass. In its place, the Blessing and Imposition of Ashes takes place in all Masses after the homily. If necessary, the Imposition of Ashes may take place apart from Mass within the Liturgy of the Word.

Other persons may be associated with the bishop or priest in the imposition of ashes, e.g., deacons, special ministers of communion and other lay persons, when there is true pastoral need. |
| Special ministers of communion and deacons may bring blessed ashes to the sick and those confined to their homes. If a minister is not available, a member of the family or another person may bring the blessed ashes to a shut-in, using one of the formulas in the Roman Missal to impose ashes. |
| For pastoral reasons the blessing and distribution of ashes may take place outside Mass. In this case, the entire liturgy of the word should be celebrated: entrance song, opening prayer, readings and chants, homily, blessing and distribution of ashes, and general intercessions. The blessing and solemn entrance, but not the procession, may be celebrated at a second Mass if many of the faithful are present. | |
The Passion may be read by three deacons, or lay readers with the priest taking the part of Christ, without candles, incense, greeting, signs of the cross or acclamation. At the mention of the Lord's death, all pause and kneel. Where pastoral reasons require it, one or both of the readings before the Passion may be omitted.
At the end of the Passion, The Gospel of the Lord, is said, but the book is not kissed.
Blessed palms remaining are kept, to be burnt for next year's ashes.

Masses are prohibited, unless the
Ordinary permits a second Mass, exclusively for those unable to
participate in the Evening Mass. "According to the Church's ancient
tradition, all Masses without a congregation are prohibited on this
day" (RM, Holy Thursday, Chrism Mass, rubric no. 1). Communion may be taken to the sick at any time, but otherwise may be distributed only during Mass. Funerals can only be celebrated without Mass.

- The Sacred Paschal Triduum of the passion and resurrection of Christ is the culmination of the entire liturgical year. (RC, n.18)
- The Paschal Triduum begins with the Mass of the Lord's Supper, reaches its high point in the Easter Vigil, and closes with Evening Prayer on Easter Sunday. (RC, n.19)
- Religious communities and other smaller communities are encouraged to join with a larger community to celebrate the liturgical services in common (PS no. 43), with a full complement of ministers and with song, rather than schedule separate celebrations (cf. PS no. 93).
- During these days it is desirable that brothers and sisters "who experience the mystery of suffering" should share in and be participants in the liturgical celebrations of the community, especially if they are in the hospital, "that they may be helped to know the meaning of this reality which they live in union with the paschal mystery of Christ."
- Therefore, keeping in mind their varying conditions and different circumstances, everything should be so arranged that in the most suitable manner the sick may have the possibility of receiving Communion and, if possible, participating in the veneration of the Cross on Good Friday.

Gifts for the poor, especially those collected during Lent as the fruit of penance, may be presented in the offertory procession while the people sing Ubi caritas. [PS 52] |
| After the Prayer After Communion, the greeting, blessing and dismissal are omitted. The celebrant incenses the Blessed Sacrament three times, receives the humeral veil and the procession follows as in the Missal. The cross-bearer goes first, [PS 54], then the Blessed Sacrament accompanied by torches and incense.
The faithful are encouraged, after the Mass of the Lord's Supper, to spend a suitable period of time during the night in the church in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament that has been solemnly reserved. Solemn adoration ends at midnight; the Blessed Sacrament remains at the Place of Repose until the Liturgical Action of Good Friday.
After the celebration, the altar is stripped without ceremony and
crosses are removed, if possible; otherwise they should be veiled.
It is appropriate that holy water be removed from the stoups at the
entrances of the church, to be replaced after new water is blessed at
the Easter Vigil.
Evening prayer is not celebrated by participants in the Mass of the Lord's Supper. |
| Mar 29 Friday | red | FRIDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORD [GOOD FRIDAY] | |
| Day of fast and abstinence. Celebration of the Mass and the sacraments is strictly prohibited, except for Penance and Anointing of the Sick. Communion may be taken to the sick, but otherwise is not distributed outside today's Celebration of the Lord's Passion. | | | Hours of the day. The Office of Readings and Morning Prayer are recommended for public celebration in parishes.
| | Celebration of the Passion of the Lord. | | The celebration has three parts:
I. Liturgy of the Word (readings, homily, intercessions)
II. Veneration of the Cross
III. Holy Communion.
The celebration begins about 3 p.m.
The altar is completely bare, without candles, cloth or cross. The ministers vest with red Mass vestments. They enter in silence and prostrate before the altar. This act of prostration, which is proper to the rite of the day, should be observed (whenever the ministers are physical able) for it signifies both the abasement of "earthly man," and also the grief and sorrow of the Church. As the ministers enter, the faithful should be standing, and thereafter should kneel in silent prayer. [PS 65] The Passion is proclaimed as on Palm Sunday. | | Readings: [40] Isa 52:13-53:12; Ps 31:2+6, 12-13, 15-16, 17+25; Heb 4:14-16; 5:7-9; John 18:1-19:42. | | The Intercessions must follow "the form and wording" handed down by tradition, but the celebrant may make a selection of some more relevant to local conditions, provided the range of intentions is preserved. [PS 67]
The cross is presented to each of the faithful individually for their
adoration, since the personal adoration of the cross is a most
important feature in this celebration. The celebrant may remove his
chasuble and shoes for the veneration. Only if necessitated by the large numbers of faithful present may the rite of veneration be made simultaneously by all present. Only one cross should be used for the veneration. [PS 69]
|
The communion rite is as described in the Missal. There is no sign of peace.
After Holy Communion, the Blessed Sacrament is carried from the church by a priest or deacon wearing a humeral veil and accompanied by two candles. The Sacrament is reserved privately outside the church for the needs of the sick and dying.
The altar is stripped at a suitable time, but the cross remains with four candles, placed so that the faithful may venerate and kiss it and spend some time in meditation. [PS 71]
| Evening Prayer is not said by participants in the afternoon liturgy. Night Prayer is said after the Celebration of the Lord's Passion at a suitable hour, with the special verse in place of the responsory. | |
| Today after the Veneration of the Cross, all
genuflect toward the cross when passing it.
| Mar 30 Saturday | violet | HOLY SATURDAY | | | The Paschal Fast is observed if possible. [CR 20] Celebration of the Mass and the sacraments is strictly prohibited, except for Penance and Anointing of the Sick. Communion may be given only as viaticum. | | | Hours of the day. The Office of Readings and Morning Prayer in public is recommended.
Night Prayer is celebrated only by those not present at the Vigil. | | | | Preparation for the Vigil includes: preparation of the bonfire; candles for all the faithful present; water for the liturgy of Baptism; flowers and decorations for the altar.
white | The Easter Vigil. | | | The celebration should truly have the character of a Vigil. It must take place at night. It should not begin before nightfall and should end before dawn. To start earlier (e.g. at the customary time for a Sunday vigil Mass) is a "reprehensible abuse". [PS 78]
The Vigil has four parts:
I. Service of Light : Bonfire, Procession with Candle, Exsultet.
II. Liturgy of the Word : Readings, psalms, prayers, Gloria, homily.
III. Liturgy of Baptism : Litany, Blessing of Water, Baptism and/or Confirmation,
Renewal of Promises, Prayer of the Faithful.
IV. Liturgy of the Eucharist : Preface of Easter I ("on this night"), special
Communicantes and Hanc igitur; double alleluia at dismissal.
This liturgical order must not be changed by anyone on his own initiative. [PS 81]
| | | Wherever possible, all the readings should be read so that the character of the Easter Vigil, which demands that it be somewhat prolonged, be respected at all costs. Where pastoral conditions require that the number of readings be reduced, there should be at least three readings from the Old Testament, taken from the law and the prophets; and the reading from Exodus (ch. 14) with its canticle, must never be omitted. | | | The Readings [41]: | |
- Gen 1:1-2:2 or 1:1, 26-31a with Ps 104:1-2, 5-6, 10+12, 13-14, 24+35 or Ps 33:4-5, 6-7, 12-13, 20-22
- Gen 22:1-18 or 22:1-2, 9a,10-13, 15-18 with Ps 16:5+8, 9-10, 11
- Exod 14:15-15:1 with Exod 15:1-2, 3-4, 5-6, 17-18 This reading and psalm are obligatory.
- Isa 54:5-14 with Ps 30:2+4, 5-6, 11-12a+13b
- Isa 55:1-11 with Isa 12:2-3, 4, 5-6
- Bar 3:9-15, 32-4:4 with Ps 19:8, 9, 10, 11
- Ezek 36:16-17a, 18-28 with Ps 42:3, 5; 43:3, 4 (when baptisms occur) or (when no baptisms) Isa 12:2-3, 4bcd, 5-6 or Ps 51:12-13, 14-15, 18-19
- Epistle: Rom 6:3-11
- Alleluia Psalm: Ps 118:1-2, 16-17, 22-23
- Gospel: Mark 16:1-7
| | | Bells are to be rung during the Gloria, and the altar candles lit. |
| The celebrant -- or, in case of necessity, a cantor -- intones the triple alleluia before the Gospel. The gospel is honored with incense, but candles are not carried.
For the texts of the rites of Baptism and Confirmation, see the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.
The dismissal with double alleluia is used tonight and throughout the octave. | | Mar 31 Sunday | white | Easter Sunday - the Pasch of the Lord | Solemnity with Octave | | Mass of the day, Gloria, Easter sequence, Renewal of Baptismal Promises (in place of Creed), Preface of Easter I ("on this day") special Communicantes and Hanc igitur; double alleluia at dismissal. | | Readings: [42] Acts 10:34a, 37-43; Ps 118:1-2, 16-17, 22-23; Col 3:1-4 or 1 Cor 5:6b-8; John 20:1-9. Alternative gospel (from the Vigil): [41] Mark 16:1-7 At an evening Mass, Luke 24: 13-35 (Lect. [46]) may be used.
Mass is to be celebrated on with great solemnity. In place of the Creed on this day, the renewal of baptismal promises takes place (as at the Vigil) and the people are sprinkled with water blessed at the Vigil, during which a song of baptismal character should be sung. The entrance stoups to the church should also be filled with the same water. [PS 97]
The Paschal Candle burns at all Hours and Masses today. It is kept in the sanctuary near the altar or ambo until Pentecost Sunday. [PS 99] | | Hours of Easter Sunday.
The Easter Vigil takes the place of the Office of Readings.
Where it is the custom, the tradition of "Baptismal Vespers" with a procession to the font is to be diligently observed. (GILH, 213)
It is most appropriate to conclude Night Prayer throughout the Easter Season with
the Regina Coeli (GILH, 92). |
| After Night Prayer the paschal candle is extinguished. It remains by the ambo or altar, and is lit throughout Easter Time at Mass and at other celebrations until Pentecost inclusive.
During the Octave, a Funeral Mass is permitted, but Ritual Masses (including Nuptial Masses) are prohibited, and all solemnities are delayed until after the Second Sunday of Easter. |

The solemn blessing with the Blessed Sacrament concludes the entire celebration: the usual blessing by the priest is replaced by the blessing with the Blessed Sacrament. The "Christmas Novena" begins today. Special texts in Mass & Office,
including the "O Antiphons" at Evening Prayer and as the Alleluia
Verse at Mass.
The weekday readings for the eight days before Christmas are proper to each
day, except on the Fourth Sunday of Advent. On
the Fourth Sunday of Advent, the weekday readings for that date are omitted,
"but they may be anticipated or used later on another day during the
week, especially to avoid duplicating the Sunday readings" (cf. rubric
before Dec 17 in the weekday Lectionary, no. 193).
These weekdays are privileged, so any memorial is considered to be optional.

[By ancient custom the dates for the great feasts of the coming year are announced after the Gospel on Epiphany by the deacon or priest.
This custom is still mentioned in the 1984 Ceremonial of Bishops,
no. 240, and in the 2002 Roman Missal.
The following text is found in an appendix of the 2011 Roman
Missal:]
Know, dear brethren, (brothers and sisters,)
that, as we have rejoiced at the Nativity of our Lord Jesus Christ,
so by leave of God's mercy
we announce to you also the joy of his Resurrection, who is our
Savior.
On the fourteenth day of February will fall Ash
Wednesday,
and the beginning of the fast of the most sacred Lenten season.
On the thirty-first day of
March
you will celebrate with joy Easter Day, the Paschal feast of our Lord
Jesus Christ.
On the twelfth day of May
will be the Ascension of our Lord Jesus Christ.
On the nineteenth day of May the
feast of Pentecost.
On the second day of June the
feast of Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ.
On
the first day of December the
First Sunday of the Advent of our Lord Jesus Christ,
to whom is honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.
Former text used in U.S.
Dear brothers and sisters,
the glory of the Lord has shone upon us,
and shall ever be manifest among us,
until the day of his return.
Through the rhythms of times and seasons
let us celebrate the mysteries of salvation.
Let us recall the year's culmination,
the Easter Triduum of the Lord:
his last supper, his crucifixion, his burial,
and his rising celebrated between the evening of the twenty-eighth day of March
and the evening
of the thirty-first day of March
Each Easter -- as on each Sunday --
the Holy Church makes present the great and saving deed
by which Christ has for ever conquered sin and death.
From Easter are reckoned all the days we keep holy.
Ash Wednesday, the beginning of Lent, will occur on the fourteenth day of February.
The Ascension of the Lord will be commemorated on
the twelfth day of May
Pentecost, joyful conclusion of the season of Easter,
will be celebrated on
the nineteenth day of May
And, this year the First Sunday of Advent will be on
the first day of December.
Likewise the pilgrim Church proclaims the passover of Christ
in the feasts of the holy Mother of God,
in the feasts of the Apostles and Saints,
and in the commemoration of the faithful departed.
To Jesus Christ, who was, who is, and who is to come,
Lord of time and history,
be endless praise, for ever and ever. R. Amen.
(One should adjust the date of the Ascension in those places where the feast is celebrated on Thursday.)
(See Acta Romana 15 [1967-72]: 61.)
Where one or more Mass intentions are prescribed without further notation, it is understood that they are prescribed for each priest and are to be said as first-intention Masses; those who are not priests are to offer as manhy Masses as priests are obliged to offer.
Every month, each Jesuit is to offer one Mass for each of these four intentions:
- The intention of Father General
- The deceased of the Society
- Our benefactors
- The needs of the Church and the Society
If possible, in November the intention for the deceased of the Society should be offered on November 3 or the day following.
The intention for the needs of the Church and the Society should be offered, if possible, on the following days:
- Jan 3 (Holy Name of the Name Jesus)
- Mar 12 (Anniversary of the canonization of Ss Ignatius and Francis Xavier)
- May 31 (Visitation)
- Sacred Heart
- Aug 7 (Anniversary of the restoration of the Society, 1814)
- Sep 27 (Anniversary of the first confirmation of the Society, 1540)
Jesuits are encouraged to become knowledgable about local diocesan liturgical practices. For example, some U.S. dioceses prescribe kneeling after the Agnus Dei while others prescribe standing. Some dioceses encourage the assembly to remain standing until the end of Communion, while others have not made any such determination.
In following the recommendations of 2002 GIRM 85 about distributing Communion from what has been consecrated at that Mass to the entire assembly (reiterated by the U.S. Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy), some dioceses do not permit bringing previously consecrated hosts from the tabernacle unless and before they are, in fact, absolutely needed during the distribution of Communion. The U.S. Bishops' Committee on the Liturgy has also reiterated on various occasions that the norm should be to consecrate enough bread and wine at each Mass for the communicants expected and never to plan on going to the tabernacle. (Note that no liturgical books explicitly permit using hosts from the tabernacle during Communion at Mass.)
Sacristans should also note, in preparing for Mass, that the celebrant is "bound to" receive Communion from what has been consecrated at that Mass (2002 GIRM 85). This rule also applies to any concelebrants, and is related to the "integrity of the sacrifice" mentioned by Pius XII in Mediator Dei (nos. 112, 115. Also see Summ Theol, IIIa, q 82, art 4). Thus, hosts from a tabernacle must never be distributed to concelebrants in place of what has been consecrated at that Mass.
Calendar to be followed
- "On Solemnities the Priest is obliged to follow the Calendar of
the church where he is celebrating." (2002 GIRM, no. 353).
- "On Sundays, on the weekdays during Advent, Christmas Time, Lent, and Easter Time, on Feasts, and on Obligatory Memorials:
"a) If Mass is celebrated with the people, the Priest should follow the Calendar of the church where he is celebrating;
"b) If Mass is celebrated with the participation of one minister only,
the Priest may choose either the Calendar of the church or his own
proper Calendar." (2002 GIRM, no. 354).
- "Members of religious institutes join with the community of the
local Church in celebrating the dedication of the cathedral and the
feasts of the principal patrons of the place and of the wider
geographical region in which they live (GILH, no. 241; UNLYC,
no. 52c). These are celebrated as feasts (see TLD, 8a, b).
- The titular of a church is celebrated as a solemnity in that church; the same is true of the anniversary of the church's dedication (TLD, 4c, 4b).
Mass for the People (Pro Populo)
- A pastor "is obliged to apply a Mass for the people of his parish on Sundays and holy days of obligation in his diocese" (CIC 534.1).
Precedence of Liturgical Celebrations
- Solemnities and Feasts of the Lord take precedence over Sundays in Ordinary Time. Other feasts and memorials falling on Sundays are omitted. Sundays of Advent, Lent and Easter take precedence over solemnities. In these cases and when solemnities occur on privileged weekdays, the solemnities are transferred, usually to the following (or first free) Monday (UNLYC 5, 60).
The following weekdays are considered in some sense
"privileged." -- All days of the Octave of Easter are celebrated as
solemnities of the Lord (UNLYC 24) and take precedence over all other
celebrations. -- Ash Wednesday and Holy Week also have precedence
over all other celebrations. -- The last week of Advent (Dec 17-24), the octave of Christmas, and the weekdays of Lent are privileged with respect to memorials (UNLYC 16).
Obligatory memorials occurring on Lenten weekdays are celebrated as optional memorials (UNLYC 14). The calendar itself only includes optional memorials during the last week of Advent and includes feasts and optional memorials during the Christmas octave. On weekdays of the Easter Season, memorials of Saints may be celebrated fully (2002 GIRM 355a).
Choice of Mass Texts
- On the liturgical days noted in nos. 1 and 2, the Priest uses
the texts associated with the celebration prescdribed or chosen
according to the norms noted above.
- "On Memorials of Saints [outside of Advent II, Lent, and Easter
Time], the proper Collect is said or, if this is lacking, one from an
appropriate Common. As to the Prayer over the Offerings and the Prayer
after Communion, unless they are proper, they may be taken either from
the Common or from the weekday of the current time of year." (2002
GIRM, no. 363).
- "On Optional Memorials,
"a) On the weekdays of Advent from Dec 17 to 24, on days within the
Octave of the Nativity of the Lord, and on the weekdays of Lent,
except Ash Wednesday and during Holy Week, the Mass texts for the
current liturgical day are used; but the Collect may be taken from a
Memorial which happens to be inscribed in the General Calendar for
that day, except on Ash Wednesday and during Holy Week. On weekdays of
Easter Time, Memorials of Saints may rightly be celebrated in full.
"b) On weekdays of Advent before Dec 17, on weekdays of Christmas
Time from Jan 2, and the weekdays of Easter Time, one of the
following may be chosen: either the Mass of the weekday, or the Mass
of the Saint or of one of the Saints whose Memorial is observed, or
the Mass of any Saint inscrdibed in the Martyrology for that day."
(2002 GIRM, no. 355).
- "On weekdays in Ordinary Time, ..., besides the orations from the
previous Sunday, orations from another Sunday in Ordinary Time may be
used, or one of the Prayers for Various Needs provided in the Missal.
However, it shall always be permissible to use from these Masses the
Collect alone." (2002 GIRM, no. 363).
"On weekdays in Ordinary Time, there may be chosen either the Mass of
the weekday, or the Mass of an Optional Memorial which happens to
occur on that day, or the Mass of any Saint inscribed in the
Martyrology for that day, or a Mass for Various Needs, or a Votive
Mass." (2002 GIRM, no. 355c)
"Daily" Masses for the dead "may be celebrated on weekdays in Ordinary
Time on which Optional Memorials occur or when the Office is of the
weekday, provided such Masses are actually applied for the dead" (2002
GIRM, no. 381). These should be used in moderation (2002 GIRM, no. 355).
When a Mass of an optional memorial is celebrated, all is done as for an obligatory memorial (see 2002 GIRM 355, GILH 234).
- When a priest celebrates with the people, in his choice of a
Mass formulary, he "should be attentive rather to the common spiritual good
of the People of God than to his own inclinations" (2002 GIRM, no. 352).
The entry "Mass ad libitum" in this Ordo is a reminder that the
various choices described above under no. 10 are available to the celebrant.
Norms in this Ordo regarding the Collect, Gloria, Readings, Creed, Preface, Eucharistic Prayer IV (and similar Eucharistic Prayers)
- "At Mass only a single Collect is ever said." (2002 GIRM,
no. 54) This rule also applies to the Prayer over the Offerings and
the Prayer after Communion (2002 GIRM, nos. 77, 89).
When a Collect of a commemoration may be optionally used (see no. 9a
above) in Advent from December 17 to 24, within the octave of
Christmas, and on weekdays of Lent, it is noted in this Ordo.
- The Gloria is prescribed "on Sundays outside Advent and
Lent, and also on Solemnities and Feasts, and at particular
celebrations of a more solemn character." (2002 GIRM, no. 53).
- The special readings prescribed in the Lectionary for
Sundays, Solemnities, and Feasts, and also for those Obligatory
Memorials that have proper readings are noted in this Ordo.
- On weekdays, apart from Solemnities, Feasts, and Memorials with
proper readings, the continuous readings assigned in the
Lectionary are noted.
"[T]hese readings will in general be used on the days to which they are assigned...
"Should, however, the continuous reading during the week from time to
time be interrupted, on account of some Solemnity or feast, or some
particular celebration, then the Priest shall be permitted, bearing in
mind the scheme of readings for the entire week, either to combine
parts omitted with other readings or to decide which readings are to
be given preference over others." (2002 GIRM, no. 358).
One should note that the Lectionary for Weekdays does provide
for each Memorial appropriate readings which may be used when the
Memorial is celebrated with greater solemnity.
- The Creed is prescribed on "Sundays and Solemnities" and may also
be used at "particular celebrations of a more solemn character" (2002
GIRM, no. 68).
- The preface is noted when it is not one of the proper, common
(weekday), or seasonal prefaces.
a. Prefaces for apostles, martyrs, pastors, virgins, religious, or
holy men and women should be used on Solemnities and Feasts of
saints. Such prefaces may also be used on memorials, an option that
will not be noted each time in this Ordo (see Notitiae 11 [1975]:312).
(b) Eucharistic Prayer IV must be used with its invariable preface
(2002 GIRM, no. 365d). However, when a seasonal preface is prescribed,
except on Christmas, Easter, and during their octaves, Eucharistic
Prayer IV may nonetheless be used, along with its invariable preface.
(c) The Eucharistic Prayers for Reconciliation, for Masses with
Children, and for Various Needs and Occasions also have invariable
prefaces. The same norms govern their use as for Eucharistic Prayer
IV. Nevertheless, although the Eucharistic Prayers for Reconciliation
are provided with their own prefaces, they may be used with other prefaces that refer to penance and conversion, for example, those of Lent (cf. 2002 Missale Romanum, Appendix to Ordo Missae).
Masses for Various Occasions
- Among Masses for various occasions "are included Ritual Masses,
Masses for Various Needs and Occasions and Votive Masses." (2002 GIRM,
no. 371):
(a) "Ritual Masses are connected with the celebration of certain
Sacraments or Sacramentals" (2002 GIRM, no. 372).
(b) "Masses for Various Needs and Occasions are used in certain
situations either as occasion arises or at fixed times" (2002 GIRM, no. 373).
(c) "Votive Masses of the mysteries of Christ or in honor of the
Blessed Virgin Mary or of the Angels or of any given Saint may be said
in response to the devotiion of the faithful on weekdays in Ordinary
Time, even if an Optional Memorial occurs" (2002 GIRM, no. 375).
(d) When the devotion of the faithful is obvious, the votive Mass of
Christ the Eternal High Priest may be celebrated on the first Thursday
of the month, that of the Sacred Heart on the first Friday, and that
of the Immaculate Heart of Mary on the first Saturday if a weekday
Mass or an Optional Memorial occurs (see Notitiae 5 [1969]: 404,
no. 17).
Colors: Ritual Masses are celebrated in their proper color, in
white, or in a festive color; Masses for Various Needs are celebrated
in the color proper to the day or the season or in violet (if the Mass
has a penitential character); Votive Masses are celebrated in the
color suited to the Mass itself or even in the color proper to the day
or the time of the year (2002 GIRM, no. 347).
Permitted Use:
Ritual Masses are prohibited on Sundays of Advent, Lent, and Easter,
on solemnities, during Holy Week and the Easter Octave, and on Ash
Wednesday and All Souls' Day (2002 GIRM, no. 372).
On weekdays in Ordinary Time, even if an optional memorial
occurs, Votive Masses may be celebrated for the sake of the
faithful's devotion (2002 GIRM 373) or a Mass for Various Needs or
prayers from those for special circumstances may be used (2002 GIRM
377). Traditional devotions are associated with Christ the Eternal
High Priest on the first Thursday of the month, the Sacred Heart on
the first Friday, and the Immaculate Heart of Mary on the first
Saturday of each month. In addition, a Mass of the BVM is encouraged
to be offered on free Saturdays (2002 GIRM 378). (see Notitiae
5 1969]: 404, no. 17)
"On days when there occurs an Obligatory Memorial or on a weekday of Advent up to and
including Dec 16, of Christmas Time from Jan 2, and of
Easter Time after the Octave of Easter, Masses for Various Needs and Occasions
and Votive Masses are in principle
forbidden. If, however, some real necessity or pastoral advantage
calls for it, in the estimation of the rector of the church or the
Priest Celebrant
himself, a Mass appropriate to the same may be used in
a celebration with peopole" (2002 GIRM, no. 376).
In case of serious need or pastoral advantage, at the
direction of the diocesan Bishop or with his permission, an
appropriate Mass may be celebrated except on solemnities, the Sundays
of Advent, Lent, and Easter, during Holy Week and the Easter Octave,
or on Ash Wednesday or All Souls' Day (2002 GIRM, no. 374).
Norms Governing the Liturgy of the Hours
- On proper solemnities and feasts such as are described under
no. 4 above, the corresponding office is said by those who are
considered assigned to that church, e.g., pastors and associates
(Gen. Inst. Lit. Hours [GILH], no. 243).
- "In private recitation [of the Liturgy of the Hours], the
calendar of the place or the person's own calendar may be used,
except on proper solemnities and feasts" (GILH, no. 243).
- In the Liturgy of the Hours, the arrangement of the Office is presented in the Ordinary for each of the seasons of the liturgical year.
- For the Scripture reading of Morning Prayer and Evening
Prayer, "especially in a celebration a congregation, a longer
Scripture reading may be chosen either from the office of readings or
the Lectionary for Mass, particularly texts that for some reason have
not been used. From time to time some other more suitable readings may
be used, in accordance with the rules in GILH, nos. 248, 249 and 251"
(GILH, no. 46).
In the prayers of intercession, the introductory formula is provided
for use when Morning Prayer or Evening Prayer is recited in common
(see GILH, no. 190).
Evening Prayer is normally taken from the Office of the occurring day,
except on Saturdays and the day before solemnities, when the
liturgical day begins the previous evening with EP I. If two solemnities occur on successive days, or a solemnity occurs on a Saturday or Monday, the Evening Prayer between the two celebrations is of the higher ranked celebration. If both are of equal rank, Evening Prayer of the current day is celebrated (cf. UNLYC 61).
Instead of the weekday Night Prayer, either of the Sunday Night
Prayers can alwyas be said (see GILH, no. 88, Ordinary of the Liturgy of the Hours, Night Prayer).
Moments of silence are encouraged after each psalm and the readings
(GILH, nos. 112, 202).
Permitted Variations in the Office or Some of its Parts
- "On weekdays when an optional memorial is permitted, for a good
reason the office of a saint listed on that day in the Roman
Martyrology, or in an approved appendix to it, may be celebrated in the same way as other memorials" (GILH 234).
"In the Office for Sundays, solemnities, feasts of the Lord listed in
the General Calendar, the weekdays of Lent and Holy Week, the days
within the Octaves of Easter and Christmas, and the weekdays from Dec
17 to 24 inclusive, it is never permissible to change the formularies
that are proper or adapted to the celebration, such as antiphons,
hymns, readings, responsories, prayers, and very often also the
psalms" (GILH, no. 247).
- The "cycle of readings from Scripture that is provided in the
Office of Readings must not be set aside during the seasons of Advent,
Christmas, Lent, and Easter. During Ordinary Time, on a particular
day or for a few days in succession, it is permissible, for a good
reason, to choose readings from those provided on other days or even
other biblical readings; for example, on the occasion of retreats,
pastoral gatherings, prayers for Christian unity, or other such
events" (GILH, no. 248).
"The readings, prayers, songs, and intercessions appointed for the
weekdays of a particular season may be used on other weekdays of the
same season" (GILH, no. 251, see also ibid., 248-50).
- Alternative psalms may be chosen as follows:
"In place of the Sunday psalms of the current week, there is an option
to substitute Sunday psalms of a different week, and, in the case of
an office celebrated with a congregation, even other psalms especially
chosen to lead the people step by step to an underestanding of the
psalms" (GILH, no. 247).
"Everyone should be concerned to respect the complete cycle of the
four-week psalter. Still, for spiritual or pastoral advantage, the
psalms appointed for a particular day may be replaced with other from
the same hour of a different day" (GILH, no. 252).
"There are also circumstances occasionally arising when it is
permissible to choose suitable psalms and other texts in the way done
for a votive office" (GILH, no. 252).
Celebration of Memorials Occurring on Privileged Days and during Privileged Seasons
- "On Sundays, solemnities, and feasts, on Ash Wednesday, during
Holy Week, and during the Octave of Easter, memorials that happen to
fall on these days are disregarded" (GILH, no. 237) in the Liturgy
of the Hours.
"On weekdays from Dec 17 to 24, during the Octave of
Christmas, and on the weekdays of Lent, no obligatory memorials are
celebrated even in particular calendars. When any happen to fall
during Lent in a given year, they are treated as optional memorials" (GILH 238).
"During privileged seasons, if it is desired to celebrate the office of a saint on a day assigned to his or her memorial,
"a) in the office of readings, after the patristic reading (with its
responsory) from the Proper of Seasons, a proper reading about the
saint (with its responsory) may follow, with the concluding prayer of the saint;
"(b) at Morning Prayer and Evening Prayer, the ending of the
concluding prayer may be omitted and the saint's antiphon (from the
proper or common) and prayer may be added" (GILH, no. 239);
(c) At Mass, the Collect may be of the saint (cf. 2002 GIRM 355a).
The Use of the Te Deum
- The Te Deum is used at the end of the Office of
Readings on Sundays outside of Lent, during the octaves of Easter and
Christmas, on solemnities, and on feasts
(GILH, no. 68).
